Second Period Struggles Sink Tomahawks


Johnstown – The Johnstown Tomahawks fell to the New Jersey Titans 9-6 at 1ST SUMMIT ARENA @ Cambria County War Memorial.

The Tomahawks struck first when Mitchell Hale slapped one passed Titans goaltender, Matt Ladd. The only assist went to Samuel Solensky at 3:36.

The Titans would score the next two goals, on special teams, to go up 2-1 in the period. First, Nick Boyagian scored on the power play. The goal came at 5:05 and was assisted by Ryan Wheeler. Then the Titans netted a shorthanded goal at 11:37. Tate Singleton scored against Johnstown’s, Jack Leavy. The lone assist went to Tyler Antonucci.

Johnstown would then tie the game at 16:56 when Andy Nedeljkovic netted his third of the season. Carson Briere picked up the assist. The goal came against Titans’ goalie, Joe Halstrom, who enter the game halfway through the period after starting goalie, Ladd, had to come out of the game with an injury. The teams went into the first intermission with the game tied, 2-2.

In the second period, New Jersey’s offense exploded with six goals. Only :36 seconds into the period, New Jersey went up 3-2 when Gavin Gulash scored. The assists went to Tate MacDonald and Oliver MacDonald. The Titans scored again at 4:46 with a goal from Matt Cameron and assists by Oliver MacDonald and Tyler Antonucci. A couple minutes later the Titans would make the game 5-2 when Gavin Gulash netted his second goal of the period. The assists went to Matt Cameron and Tyler Antonucci.
After the fifth goal, the Tomahawks would pull goaltender, Jack Leavy, in favor of, Britt League.

Moments after League entered the game, New Jersey added yet another goal. This time it was an unassisted shorthanded goal from Kyle Jeffers at 8:40. With the Titans up 6-2, Johnstown called a time out. Moments later, Johnstown would score a goal of their own when Joe Kile scored his ninth of the season. The power play goal came at 9:17 of the period and was assisted by Ben Schmidling and Mitchell Hale. At 16:48 the Titans would strike again, this time on the power play. Tate Singleton scored with assists going to Tyler Antonucci and Todd Goehring.

The Titans would add one more goal in the period which gave them an 8-3 lead after two periods of play. The eighth goal was scored by Gavin Gulash, which gave him a hat-trick in the period. The assists went to Jimmy Dowd and Oliver MacDonald at 17:12. In the third period, while on a two-man advantage, the Titans scored their ninth goal of the game. Kyle Jeffers assisted by Nick Boyagain and Ryan Naumovski at 7:48. Johnstown would score an unassisted goal by David Schmidling, his first of the season, at 9:03 to make it 9-4, Titans. On a power play, Johnstown would make the game 9-5 when Ben Schmidling poked one in. The assist went to Karim Del Ponte at 16:08 of the third period.
With seconds left in the game, Donovan Ott would score to pull the game within three goals. The goal came at 19:51 of the third period and was assisted by Toby Sengvongxay. The goal was the final of the game as the Titans beats the Tomahawks 9-6.
